West Ham United kicked-off their pre-season schedule with an entertaining 3-2 win over SCR Altach in Austria. The Hammers travelled over the border from their Swiss training camp in Bad Ragaz to take on the team which finished eighth in the Austrian Bundesliga last season. After ten days of hard work in the mountains, the Irons played their part in a five-goal thriller. Manuel Pellegrini handed a debut to goalkeeper Roberto, but it was one of his first signings, Carlos Sanchez, who headed the Londoners in front from Robert Snodgrass’s left-wing corner inside six minutes. With both teams playing decent football on an immaculate playing surface, chances were created at both ends during an action-packed opening half. Angelo Ogbonna cleared off the line from the impressive Malian teenager Ousmane Diakite and Manfred Fischer fired wide before West Ham doubled their lead in direct style midway through the half. After some patient passing in their own half, Mark Noble launched the Hammers forward with a long, straight ball over the Altach defence. Michail Antonio broke the offside trap, rounded goalkeeper Martin Kobras and slotted in his side’s second of the game.Ben Johnson then clipped the crossbar with a curler but Altach kept at it, to their credit, and halved their arrears moments later when Emir Karic’s low cross was swept home by the lively Fischer. The same player tested Roberto again before West Ham created a decent chance for a third, only for Felipe Anderson’s chip to be headed off the line by Jan Zwischenbrugger.

Referee Felix Ouschan brought the half to a close without any added time, but not before Roberto had made another comfortable save from Christian Gebauer. But the Spaniard could do nothing to prevent the same player equalising three minutes after the break, when the Altach No7 confidently converted after good work down the right flank from Brazilian full-back Anderson. The game continued to ebb and flow and the fifth and final goal of the game arrived on 58 minutes. The returning Andriy Yarmolenko, who was one of eight substitutes introduced at half-time alongside, among others, Winston Reid, won a corner on the right. The set piece was taken short and another substitute, Jack Wilshere, delivered a left-footed cross that Issa Diop stooped to head past Kobras from 12 yards. The game lost some fluency in the closing half-hour, with Altach bringing on nine substitutes of their own and Declan Rice making his return to action in place of Diop for the final 20 minutes.

West Ham United U23s' first pre-season game ended in a 1-1 draw against Braintree Town on a clear Friday evening in Essex. Adam Mills' first-half chip for the home side opened the scoring and West Ham had to wait until the 86th minute to get back on terms with their senior opposition.

Sean Adarkwa’s cool finish was no less than the Hammers deserved as they competed physically and created numerous chances throughout the game. Braintree Town defended admirably but coach Steve Potts will be pleased with how the U23s performed in their first test of pre-season.

West Ham United’s hopes of winning a first Premier League Asia Trophy were ended by treble winners Manchester City in China. Wearing their smart navy Third Kit and with a special ‘Hammers’ message displayed on their shirts in Mandarin, the Londoners made a fine start and led through Mark Noble’s first-half penalty, only for two goals in the space of three minutes to give Pep Guardiola’s side the lead by the interval. And, following the introduction of a succession of City’s top international players in place of the youngsters who kicked-off the game, the Premier League champions added two further goals to run out comfortable 4-1 winners.

West Ham United’s week-long trip to China ended in disappointment as the Hammers were defeated 1-0 by Newcastle United in the Premier League Asia Cup third/fourth-place play-off. Japan international Yoshinori Muto was the Magpies’ match-winner, expertly diverting wing-back Jamie Sterry’s cross into the bottom left-hand corner of Lukasz Fabianski’s net eleven minutes before half-time. The east Londoners dominated possession for long periods at the Hongkou Football Stadium in Shanghai, particularly in the second half, but were unable to seriously trouble Newcastle’s Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Indeed, the Hammers’ best opportunities came mainly from headers, with Felipe Anderson going the closest when his effort from Robert Snodgrass’s 63rd-minute corner clipped the top of the crossbar. Earlier, Chicharito had looped an effort over the top from a Manuel Lanzini free-kick. Then, after the break, Jack Wilshere saw his shot blocked by Javier Manquillo and a stretching Michail Antonio later nodded the England midfielder’s cross too high. At the other end, Winston Reid and Declan Rice, who played the second 45 minutes at centre-half, were called into action regularly, making a succession of important clearances and interceptions, while Lukasz Fabianski made his first preseason appearance in goal.

West Ham U23s finished their pre-season campaign with a 6-0 win against RSC Anderlecht in a prestigious pre-season friendly at the RSC Anderlecht Training Centre. Goals from Kemp, Powell, Watson and Afolayan saw the Hammers past their Belgian opposition on Friday afternoon. The friendly marked the end of the U23s pre-season programme where they have gone unbeaten in six games across three countries.

Athletic Club claimed the Betway Cup on penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw at London Stadium. All the goals came within the opening 23 minutes of a thrilling opening to the game, as Bilbao moved into a two-goal lead through Sebastien Haller’s own goal and Inaki Williams’ close range finish. But West Ham came roaring back with two goals of their own inside 85 remarkable seconds, as Manuel Lanzini notched his third goal of pre-season and Jack Wilshere levelled. Somewhat surprisingly, that marked the end of the goalscoring and after Chicharito and Grady Diangana missed from the spot, Yuri Berchiche’s successful penalty sealed a 4-2 shootout success for the visitors.
