PIRATE EDITION

West Ham United came from 2-0 down to earn a share of the spoils in their first pre-season match of the summer at Dundee. The Scottish Premiership side looked set to claim the Hammers’ scalp when they led 2-0 thanks to goals at the start of each half from Charlie Adam and Paul McMullan. But West Ham came roaring back and a quickfire double from Jamal Baptiste and Jarrod Bowen ensured their week-long training camp in St Andrews would end on a positive note. With the Hammers’ international players yet to return to pre-season, David Moyes had a blend of youth and experience at his disposal at the Kilmac Stadium. Dundee are only four days out from the start of their season, with the Scottish League Cup campaign getting underway on Tuesday, so perhaps it was little surprise that they made the sharper start.

West Ham United U23s produced an incisive attacking performance in their opening friendly game of pre-season, seeing off Loughborough University 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Following two weeks of more physically focused work, the young Hammers capped off a week-long tactical training camp with an impressive attacking display against the United Counties League outfit.

Plenty of fresh faces were on display in Claret and Blue, including numerous U18s players - on their own training camp at Loughborough University - and summer signings Thierry Nevers and Armstrong Oko-Flex, who both started in an exciting attacking trio alongside Amadou Diallo.

West Ham United scored their first win of the pre-season with a hard-earned 2-1 victory at Northampton Town on Tuesday evening. The Hammers were quick off the mark against their EFL League Two opponents and went ahead inside two minutes when the lively Jarrod Bowen's right-wing cross was shinned into the top corner of his own net by home defender Sid Nelson. And it was 2-0 to Stuart Pearce's side eleven minutes later when a slick piece of interplay ended with captain Manuel Lanzini teeing up Conor Coventry and the Republic of Ireland U21 international finished accurately from outside the penalty area. The Cobblers did pull a goal back through Sam Hoskins before half-time and created chances after replacing all ten outfield players in the second half, but goalkeeper Nathan Trott stood firm to ensure West Ham would travel back down the M1 as winners.

West Ham United and Leyton Orient battled their way to a 0-0 draw in a pre-season friendly at the Breyer Group Stadium on Tuesday night. On a night of few chances, the senior players on show – including the likes of Aaron Cresswell, Mark Noble, Michail Antonio, Angelo Ogbonna and Darren Randolph – got a valuable 90 minutes in their legs. Xande Silva and Michail Antonio both came close to breaking the east London deadlock in the closing stages, only to be denied by home goalkeeper Sam Sargeant on both occasions, as the teams had to settle for a share of the spoils.

West Ham United U23s suffered a late defeat in their second pre-season fixture of 2021/22, going down 2-1 to Ebbsfleet United at Kuflink Stadium. The National League South team were well on top in the first half and deserved their first-half lead through Dominic Poleon, but West Ham's youngsters came out reinvigorated for the second half and equalised within 30 seconds of the restart through Nathan Holland. Yet despite a more even contest ensuing, a direct ball forwards in the closing stages was to prove Dmitri Halajko's side's undoing, allowing Th

West Ham United scored three past Championship side Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium to earn their second pre-season victory in a row. David Moyes' Irons were on top from the very opening moments of the game and would have enjoyed a greater lead than 1-0 at half-time, were it not for inspired goalkeeping from Reading's Rafael between the posts. A fortuitous own-goal by Jeriel Dorsett eventually granted the Hammers the lead, and with West Ham manager David Moyes able to introduce a full raft of substitutes in a slower-paced second half, Academy of Football graduate Ben Johnson set up Conor Coventry for a tap-in before adding a third himself with a superb slaloming run in the closing stages.

Thierry Nevers scored a hat-trick – his first goals in Claret and Blue – as West Ham United U23s recovered from an early deficit to hit Southend United for five in pre-season.

The Hammers were off-key in their defeat to National League side Ebbsfleet United last week, and made a slow start in Essex when loose passing allowed Matthew Rush’s early shot across goal to find the bottom corner.

But rather than allow their heads to bow, the young Hammers rose to the challenge, equalising through Nevers’ smart header after Amadou Diallo had seen a shot from distance parried out.

Jamal Baptiste then headed the Hammers in front before half-time from an Emmanuel Longelo corner, before another Nevers header and a tap-in arrived either side of Mesaque Dju’s thunderbolt.

PIRATE EDITION

West Ham United ran in six goals in a pre-season goal fest at Celtic, defeating the Scottish Premiership side 6-2. The visitors scored three in each half, coming from 1-0 down to lead 3-1 at the break thanks to Michail Antonio’s double and a Mark Noble penalty. Saïd Benrahma, Jarrod Bowen and Armstrong Oko-Flex got in on the act after the restart to round off a highly entertaining 90 minutes in Glasgow. With 18,000 fans permitted back in Celtic Park for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, there was an air of anticipation in the atmosphere as the teams entered the pitch, and the game began at a fast pace. With four minutes on the clock Antonio burst clear of the home defence, but was denied by goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas as he aimed for the far post. Two minutes later the Scottish Premiership side had the lead, as Callum McGregor pinched possession off Manuel Lanzini and shaped his shot around Craig Dawson’s attempted block to leave Łukasz Fabiański helpless. Noble seized upon a poor pass from defender Dane Murray to release Antonio, whose quick-feet left the goalkeeper grounded before knocking home on 23 minutes. Nine minutes later, Antonio had his second. This time Pablo Fornals laid the chance on, knocking the ball down the side for Antonio to outpace Anthony Ralston and exploit the gap left by Barkas at his near post and knock home. West Ham kept the pressure on, and a foul by Ismaila Soro on Antonio seven minutes before the break gave Noble the opportunity to add a third from the spot.

The entertainment didn’t let up in the second half, with Celtic striking first to briefly give themselves hope. Liel Abada delivered a cross from the right, and Ryan Christie’s close-range header had too much heat on it for Darren Randolph to keep out. With 54 minutes played, the Hammers’ two-goal lead was restored, as Antonio held the ball up expertly on half-way to release Fornals to his left. The Spain midfielder spotted Benrahma’s run on the right, and picked him out, with the Algerian doing the rest by sitting goalkeeper Scott Bain down and stroking home. The Hammers’ pace on the break caused Celtic headaches all afternoon and they added a fifth 16 minutes from the end. Ben Johnson’s pass inside was helped on by Benrahma and Bowen’s flick was exquisite to take the ball inside the left-hand post. There was still time for the visitors to add a sixth, as Oko-Flex – a summer arrival to the Academy from Celtic – found the bottom right corner with a shot across goalkeeper Bain.

West Ham United U23s could consider themselves unfortunate in defeat as they slipped to a late 2-1 defeat to League Two side Crawley Town. The Hammers were on the back foot for long stretches of the first half and fell behind early on to a close-range header from a Trialist, but rallied after the break and had a succession of opportunities they sadly could not put away. Half-time substitute Thierry Nevers' third goal in two games did eventually grant Dmitri Halajko's development squad the equaliser they deserved, the forward twisting inside the box to slam home a close-range finish. But Crawley went on to win it with ten minutes to go when Sam Ashford picked up a rebound in the West Ham area and squeezed the ball in at Krisztian Hegyi's near post.

Arthur Masuaku made his pre-season bow as West Ham United Under 23s drew 2-2 with National League side Aldershot Town. The DR Congo international returned to action after missing the tail-end of last season with a knee problem and impressed during his 45 minutes on the pitch at Rush Green Stadium, defending strongly and providing an assist for Armstrong Okoflex’s opening goal.

Masuaku was powerless to stop Aldershot equalising when Pierre Ekwah’s pass was intercepted by Toby Edser and the No.8 powered a left-foot shot high past David Martin, and he had been replaced by the time Kevin Lokko headed Lewis Kinsella’s cross in at the near post early in the second half.

However, the Hammers stuck to their task and were rewarded 19 minutes from time when Okoflex pounced on a loose ball and smashed high into the net from around 12 yards to level.

The Irons controlled the game for long periods in front of watching first-team manager David Moyes and coaches Kevin Nolan, Billy McKinlay and Stuart Pearce, and it was summer signing Okoflex who provided the cutting edge to score his third and fourth pre-season goals.

Saïd Benrahma’s sublime goal on his return to Brentford was enough to hand West Ham United a fourth straight pre-season win. Benrahma spent two years with the Bees prior to heading across London to the Hammers last year, and he reminded the west Londoners of his abilities with a beautiful, curling strike which gave his team a 1-0 win on their first trip to Brentford Community Stadium. After scoring six at Celtic a week ago, it was the clean sheet which was the stand out plus point for David Moyes’ men this time around as they continue to build for the Premier League kick-off, now just two weeks away. With around 1,000 Hammers having the opportunity to follow their team on the road for the first time since March last year, both sets of fans were in fine voice as the game kicked-off.

Dmitri Halajko's development squad were in full control of the pre-season fixture throughout and added a third in the latter half courtesy of Bernardo Rosa's well-worked team goal.

But it was Longelo who stole the plaudits initially, twice finding the top corner in the first half with consecutive efforts from set-pieces either side of a missed Birmingham penalty.

West Ham United clinched an unbeaten pre-season campaign – and their first Betway Cup victory since 2018 – with a professional 2-0 win over Serie A heavyweights Atalanta at London Stadium. The Hammers put in a promising display ahead of next weekend’s Premier League season opener against Newcastle as goals at the tail end of both halves – both set up by Said Benrahma – clinched victory. A high-tempo match yielded plenty of entertainment for a buoyant home support, with the win set on its way when Benrahma capitalised on a miscommunication at the back to chip the ball over the top for Michail Antonio, who thrashed home seconds prior to half-time.

West Ham had been the better side during the opening period and continued to carve out opportunities in the second, capped off when Benrahma’s stooping header from Ryan Fredericks' cross was deflected into the net by Pablo Fornals. A diligent defensive display at the other end, meanwhile, will have delighted manager David Moyes, as his side by and large nullified Serie A’s top scorers in each of the last three seasons. With the Claret and Blue Army at its strongest inside London Stadium since pre-pandemic times, both sets of players were roared on upon their emergence by an enthusiastic home crowd.

Dan Chesters came off the bench at half-time to inspire West Ham United U23s to a hard-fought win over Millwall U23s in their final pre-season fixture on Monday afternoon.

With a season opener against Arsenal U23s at London Stadium looming next Monday evening, the Hammers toiled in the first half against their local rivals, enjoying plenty of possession without too much end product.

Yet the emergence of Chesters from the bench at half-time sprung the game into life, the attacking midfielder slamming home a near-post finish within moments of coming on.

A clever set-piece routine 15 minutes later involving Chesters saw the midfield tee up Kamarai Swyer to double the Hammers' lead with a volleyed finish, before Millwall set up a nervous last quarter-of-an-hour through Nana Boateng's tap-in.
