LONDON MID SURREY TIMES
Friday 20, September 1901
The club's first ever match in the Western League was played on Monday 16 September 1901. Heavy rain for the journey across London to meet Queens Park Rangers on their latest ground at Latimer Road. Rangers had financial problems at the time and had lost their previous ground at Kensal Rise. The West London club had not had the necessary time to bring their new abode 'up to scratch' and the place was in an awful condition. The surface of the pitch was very rough and uneven, and there was absolutely no covered accommodation at all for the spectators. When West Ham arrived there was no dressing room available and the team had to make use of a public house nearby.
The young reserve, Hitchens came into the side in place of the unwell Ratcliffe, but Bill Kelly, usually good in the air, turned out despite the stitches to his head, and he defended very well with his feet. The constant rain meant everyone, spectators and players alike were soaked, but the Hammers were much the better side, and were superb in defence, with Charlie Craig at his best. It resulted in a resounding 4-1 victory with Hitchens (2), Corbett and Linward scoring.
