West Ham United's saw off Newcastle United in a five-goal thriller at teh Boleyn Ground. The Hammers were seventh in the table when the Magpies came to town, and they rose a place with this victory. Stanley Earte, Wilf James and Vivian Gibbins were all on target as the home crowd went home happy. However, West Ham would only win two more games all season as they slipped down the table to finish in 18th position.

GEORGE PETCHEY (1952-53) Born this day Whitechapel, London
Given only two Second Division outings during his time at Upton Park in the inside-right position, his initial appearance being made against Hull City in a 0-0 draw at Upton Park on the 1 September 1952, and the other against Birmingham City five days later, also at the Boleyn. He went on to make over 250 appearances for Queens Park Rangers as a wing-half. Transferred to Crystal Palace in May 1960, he made a further 153 senior showings for the Glaziers and was an ever-present as Palace won promotion to Division Three in 1961. Also helped them into Second Division in 1964, before injury ended his career in 1965. He then won further fame as manager of Leyton Orient and Millwall, after cutting his teeth in management as Bert Head's assistant. In 1986 he was helping to run Brighton's junior teams and went on to be the Youth Development Officer at the Goldstone Ground.
